A part of our mission at the Woodsmen Show is to provide education on the history of our area, the great woods of Pennsylvania or as it is now called - the Pennsylvania Wilds. In cooperation with DCNR, we are pleased to present the Woodhick Grove.

WOODHICK GROVE
August 1 and 2, 2008

Travel back in time to the good ol’ days of the “wood hick”.  Learn the life of a logger during the area’s logging boom, through live demonstrations and historically accurate reenactments.  Join “river hog” Van Wagner and the “timber beast” Griz Hains, as portrayed by Rich Pawling, for some fun and laughs while Griz’s sidekick Walk tries to keep ‘em all in line.  They’ll play some folk music often sung by the men and women who, for a few cold months of the year, called a logging camp deep within Penn’s Woods home.

The loggers weren’t the only ones who labored hard in the lumber camps, be sure to visit the Grove’s blacksmith as he demonstrates his skills and shows his wares throughout the day on both days.

Bio of performers:

Van Wagner once worked as a coal miner, a logger and is now a songwriter, schoolteacher and historical interpreter, which he incorporates into his music.  He is a yearly performer at the Woodsmen’s Show along with Wood hick Rich Pawling.  Van performs live shows throughout Pennsylvania and throughout the year.  Through music, laughter and a whole lot of culture, his program celebrates the past, present and future of Pennsylvania’s lumber heritage.

Rich Pawling, an adjunct professor at Penn State Berks, is an award winning educational/interpretive specialist and owner of History Alive!, a professional organization that provides living history first person characterizations and dramas that are not only entertaining and educational but historically accurate.  He conducts his programs throughout the United States and Canada.

Doug Firestone is a traditional blacksmith, who creates his wares using 18th century techniques, and he specializes in custom made products from kitchen utensils to fireplace sets to gardening equipment.  Doug owns and operates Firestone Forge in Germania, PA.
